FRIEDRICHSHAFEN VARSAVIA 2014

Destinazione Campionato europeo HST in Polonia - Destination European HST Championship in Poland

Here we are, ready for the trip to the largest fair in Europe: http://www.hamradio-friedrichshafen.de . Now since June 2001 the trip has become a habitude, I only missed the one in 2002 because I was in the hospital. In recent years, going by my own means, it has become a springboard towards visiting European Capitals and all around.

Like every years, it is an opportunity to visit some European Capitals. This year we have decided for Warsaw. On this occasion we will also be able to see the European Morse Alphabet Championship HST (High Speed Telegraphy) Memorial Alfred Cwenar, SP7HOR which takes place in early July in Skierniewice. Departure on Thursday the 26th of June and first stop in Mittenwald near Garmisch, Unesco Heritage City. Pretty alpine village renowned for its beautiful frescoed houses and for the Italian art of violin making. In the historic center, the Parish Church of St. Peter und Paul, built in Baroque style between 1734 and 1749, is worth a visit.

Mittenwald

It happens in the middle of a Religious Festival, everyone is dressed in local costumes, a handful of people follow what are probably the Mayor and the Bishop. We skip the visit of Rottenbuch Abbey and after a snack in Mittenwald with the first beer we head towards Kempten.

Monumental monastic complex. The furnishings of the living room are from 1732-1742. The Rococo style throne room. it also includes the monumental basilica of St. Lorenz, built starting from 1652, and a large garden ending in the former Orangerie. Also worth seeing is Rathausplatz: the Town Hall square, with beautiful Renaissance and Baroque houses as well as several bars and restaurants, the church of St. Mang, built in Romanesque style in the first half of the 15th century. In the square in front of the church there is a valuable Art Nouveau fountain built in 1905. I escape the visit because I have seen hundreds of these Abbeys and I have a lot of confusion in my head and I opt for a nap in the car since I have to drive. After the visit to the city we arrive in Lindau in the evening.

In the hotel we find Piero I2RTF and Paola, Roberto IK2AZJ and Mariuccia and friend Bernard F5TO from Sable d'Olonne with his lady. After a nice aperitif at the Hotel Bulligan offered by the owner Ernst we decide to have dinner together in Kressbronn at the Max and Moritz Bierhaus.

We can smoke Tuscan Cigar also here in front of the Lake Constance (Bodensee in German). We have a good supply of them, because after tried the Tuscan Cigar the others you don't likes anymore. Friday  is dedicated to the fair, we have a radio appointment with Giampiero IZ5CCS from Florence and immediately connect him to the agreed frequency. He is already in line for the ticket and we take the opportunity to let him buy also ours. We spend the whole day at the fair, between a beer, a frankfurter and San Daniele Ham from our Friulian friends.

qui sotto due foto del 2013: this two photos under are from last year:

The day was long, we stop at the supermarket to buy some spices (very good in these parts) and then return to the Hotel for a refreshment. Let's go back to dinner at Max and Moritz and we are joined by Giampiero IZ5CCS with his eighty year old mother, very perky and funny. On Saturday we dedicate it to visiting the surroundings. First stop on the island of Reichnau with a visit to its Abbey Complex. In the afternoon we go to Constance and we turn it far and wide. A beautiful city full of life. We get to the port to see the monument to the cheerful women up close.

Dopo trecento chilometri attorno a mezzogiorno arriviamo a Ratisbona.

Every so often a burst of water does not stop us, if not for a beer or for the ladies to shop. By now we have taken a taste and we return to dinner at Max & Moritz last chance to stock up on beers. On Sunday morning departure at eight after a hearty breakfast, Regensburg awaits us (Regensburg in German). After three hundred kilometers around noon we arrive in Regensburg. Time to visit the center, a UNESCO heritage site and we stop into a bar for a short snack.

In venti minuti siamo già in piazza Vincislao.

The journey to Prague resumes immediately. In the early afternoon we arrive in Prague 4, Marcella is waiting for us to give us our rooms. She asks us what we want for breakfast and after a brief refresh we are ready for dinner. Two hundred meters from the Hotel there is a very nice new restaurant. We are fine, too bad there is no access for our friend Lorenzo, even if they advertise it. In fact, he won't see us anymore because the next evening we will go to dinner near the Hotel di Lorenzo near the Charles bridge. We retire early so that we can rest in the morning for the visit of Prague. Marcella provided us with tickets for public transport and at eight-thirty we are ready for departure. In twenty minutes we are already in Vincislao square.

He has it golden. Every now and then someone passes and gives him a polish. It is located at the exit of Prague Castle. After the visit to the Castle we head towards Piazza dell'Orologio, the day before the church of Santa Maria di Tyn was closed we take advantage of it on the second day to visit it. Then a tour of the Jewish quarter and then shopping for the old center. The days fly by quickly and we are back in the evening, we separate from Lorenzo and have dinner at Domyno in Prague four, unfortunately the service leaves a lot to be desired is not like in 2009, it has become cheapish. The morning after a hearty breakfast departure for Poland. First stop the city of Breslavia, Wroclaw in Polish. We park and go towards the main square. The Bicocchi agency suggested the Spitz brewery famous for its dark and lard croutons.

We have no difficulty finding the brewery and after a short visit to the city center we continue on our way to Skierniewice, the main destination of our tour. After a piece of highway the TomTom makes us take a rough road. With a little stomach ache we arrive at our destination. The hotel is not that great, but we will adapt after a nice disinfectant cleaning. The reception of the Poles, however, is one of the warmest ever. We also meet friends who was in Obzor on the Black Sea. Dinner at the hotel and well-deserved rest after the disastrous afternoon trip.

After the opening ceremony of the HST Memorial Championship Alfred Cwenar we see the preparatory performances of the high speed contest. We can call them Morse professionals.

Around ten thirty we leave the high school where the championship takes place and we head towards the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Nicholas of Lowicz.

Friends take the opportunity to visit the Ethnographic Museum which displays Polish art and historical finds from the region. I rest outside on a bench and smoke my Tuscan. In the afternoon we take the opportunity to go and visit Chopin's house in Zelazowa Wola. Unfortunately it turns out to be a disappointment, in the house there is nothing but background music that can be heard in all the semi-empty rooms. The gardens surrounding the villa are magnificent.

Rientriamo in albergo per la cena. We go back in Hotel for dinner.

After a walk through the semi-deserted city we return to the hotel. There is no shop open, if not the supermarket and the liquor and tobacconist shop open night and day. The next day we will go to Warsaw. After a hearty breakfast we leave. In less than half an hour we are in Warsaw, the highway is finally perfect. The Tom Tom takes us to the parking near the old town.

After the view to the old city we decide to go to the Wilanow Palace also called the little Versailles. The day is warm and magnificent. We visit the Palace and we spend more than two hours to appreciate the works contained within, a mix of Chinese, Polish, Italian and Italian architecture. Inside you can admire collections of furniture, paintings, jewelry and ceramics.

After a snack we head towards Nieborow. The day before we could not visit it because we was late and it was closing. This time we arrive on time.

Nieborow

The palace of Nieborow concentrates the history of Poland from the 12th to the 16th century and has passed on to several families. Inside there are paintings by Polish and European masters. A collection of prints in thousands of copies and a rich library with rare texts from the 16th century. The contained furniture is of various European origins.

At the exit of the building, in a Streetfood, my wife sees the famous Zapiekanka sandwich and does not miss it. She heard about this sandwich on television and finally got it. Near Nieborow there is a famous garden, Arkadia Park and we do not miss the opportunity to visit it. Inside we find married couples intending to take souvenir photos, we also take advantage of it.

The day was long and we return to the hotel for dinner. Tomorrow the trip to Warsaw with the organization awaits us. By bus they will take us to the city Warsaw to visit the Royal Palace.

After this fascinating visit, they leave us a couple of free hours to visit the old city. We also get to see the changing of the guard.

Varsavia

We return in the early afternoon for the closing ceremony of the Memorial and with the relative awards in the presence of local authorities led by the Mayor. The final gala dinner will follow.

Skierniewice

We are also rewarded as visitors. Now we are ready for the gala dinner. With Beppe we drink ten vodka snacks, a Belarusian occasionally comes to fill us up.

After a hearty and tasty dinner, there is also an opportunity to stretch your legs with a dance with Russian music. Now the evening is drawing to a close and after a nice cigar we retire, Krakow awaits us tomorrow and on the way we will stop to visit the black Madonna of Czestochowa. At half past nine we are already at the parking lot of the Sanctuary. Practically it is a citadel where the Poles go on pilgrimage and is overcrowded. We try to get closer to the churchyard of the Madonna but it is impossible. Beppe has the intuition to contact the nuns of the information office. To a nun who speaks perfectly Italian she says: we have traveled 1,500 km and we cannot see the Madonna. He asks us how many we are and guides us to under the altar making his way through the crowd. We do the last piece on our knees, but it was worth it. The Madonna can only be seen during the service, after the church is closed.

Czestochowa

After buying some little pictures and being blessed by a priest in charge of this function and after a couple of snags of Holy Water we decide to leave again. People has become a lot. The day is finally hot and in the car we turn on the air conditioning. At one p.m. we are in Krakow, we take possession of the rooms and by bus we go to the city center. We have a snack in a shopping center and my wife gives me a nice cigar.

Lorenzo also joins us in the city and around seven p.m. we decide to go to dinner in a nice restaurant that the Bicocchi Anna agency had reviewed before leaving. The choice as usual is appropriate. Upon our arrival after the booking call, they also let us find the slide for our friend Lorenzo's chair.

On returning to the hotel by bus we find a Polish who speaks Italian perfectly and regrets that Italian is not the international language. He was born in Poland but his second home is Italy. It is dark and he shows us the stop of our hotel. After a restful sleep on Monday morning we continue the return journey with a stop in Graz. Along the way we stop in Olomouc.

In piazza ci concediamo uno spuntino.

But not before stopping in Wadowice hometown of Pope Wojtyla. Around half past twelve we are already in Olomouc, we are back in the Czech Republic. In the square we treat ourselves to a snack.

Nella piazza principale ceniamo all'aperto. Non male per questa estate anomala.

Towards evening we are in Graz, we take possession of the rooms and we walk towards to the center. In the main square we have dinner outdoors. Not bad for this anomalous summer.

Verso mezzogiorno siamo in piazza Unita d'Italia.

We are on the thirteenth day, finally we return. We decide to cross Slovenia and go to Trieste, I have never been there. Around noon we are in Piazza Unita d'Italia.

After lunch in the open-air square, we return home. The golf abstinence begins to make itself felt ................... but it was worth it.
